Ken Holland: RPS distinctions and Elliot Erwitt
​
As a member of the Royal Photographic Society assessment team, Ken is lucky enough to have access to some successful licentiate panels. He will be showing these panels, explaining the criteria used for RPS assessments, and outlining the whole award application process.​
​
In the second half of the evening Ken will be examining Elliott Erwitt's quote "Photography is about finding something interesting in an ordinary place" and showing his own "ordinary" places and people.
​

David Gilliver The Art of Light Painting
David’s amazing Light Paintings are created using very long exposures, whereby he ‘paints’ with light to add beautiful and ethereal light trails to landscapes and cityscapes. In his talk, he will explain his processes and the tools he uses, and share a variety of his stunning images.

October 11th
Club night : Light painting practical. A follow-up practical to D Giliver talk the previous week
​
Hot on the heels of the inspirational talk by David Gilliver on Light Painting, members will have an evening to put into practice the tips and techniques that David shared. There will be a short recap in the hall, then there will be time outside to paint with light. The session will be led by Nigel West and Jackie Ridley. Come prepared to be outside and also bring your camera.

Club night Looking at light paintings and an Open Night​

We will be looking at the light painting images inspired by David's talk the previous week. Then we will be looking at club members photography. If you want to participate, please let us know via the contact page.

Digital images : A critique evening on the theme of Near and Far

We will be looking at both local images and images from far flung places. From Teignmouth and Dawlish, to the Arctic and tropics.

All about Mobile Phone photography
​
Jeanette (Jet - hence Jet Black Squares) is the founder and Creative Director of Jet Black Squares. Combining her former teaching career in the East End of London with a more recent corporate photography business of 13 years, she has created a hub for everything creative surrounding the smartphone.
Her passion is showing people of all ages how to get the best photos from their phone - she believes that photography should be available to everyone and not just those who have a ‘fancy camera’. She will be demonstrating how to get the best from the camera we have with us at all times..

Cole Thompson : Black & white Fine Art photography
Cole's goal is to create black and white fine art photography which reflects his personal vision. he covers a wide range of subjects, from portfolios such as The Ghosts of Auschwitz, Harbinger, Melting Giants and Easter Island, as well as many of his favorite individual images, such as The Angel Gabriel. What is the difference between “black and white photography” and “black and white fine art photography?” I guess one documents, and one interprets. This evening we will be looking at images from the previous week. Naomi will then show some of her photography from Hospiscare in Exeter and take us from an initial brief "Hospice at Home" to the finished fundraising booklet. We will then have a demonstration on mounting prints.

Martine Hamilton-Knight : Architectural photography
​
Martine Hamilton Knight DLitt (Hon), FHEA is a professional architectural photographer with over three decades of industry experience. Her images are published worldwide in books, journals, and have been the subject of several exhibitions, most recently with her photographs for Sir Nikolaus Pevsner's Buildings of England series of guidebooks.

It's a small world - A practical session
​
Bring your camera and any other equipment you may have for taking macro photos. Marc Dunlop will be leading a session on what macro ‘is’ and how to go about getting in close and personal. Don’t worry if you haven’t got anything suitable as there will be plenty of things to borrow from cu lens to extension tubes.

Digital image critique evening
​
To help us all improve, we are asking everyone to bring between 3 and 6 projected images for group discussions. Bring a memory stick on the night or email your images to Naomi ahead of time on webmaster.dtpc@gmail.com
The idea is to display your best work, your ‘almosts’ which you could do with some help on, and the ‘I really don’t know what I did wrong here’ pictures and we can all offer constructive criticism.

Paul Mitchell - On Zoom: The Seeing Eye
​
Paul talks about looking beyond the obvious and includes exploring details, textures and shapes found in both nature and man made objects. He will also explain various creative techniques such as intentional camera movement, multiple exposures through to the use of creative lenses and filters. Paul’s talk is fully illustrated with digitally projected images.

Tony Worobiec - The Intimate Landscape.
​
Often when we consider the notion of "Landscape Photography" we think in terms of the grand panorama, which can often lead us to well-known iconic locations. In this presentation I want the audience to value the often unseen aspect of landscape that possibly only they will have identified. By appreciating the subtle changes in the land possibly as a consequence of the seasons, or valuing some small isolated detail others may well have passed by, one's response to landscape becomes much more personal and ultimately more valued.
​
Tony has won awards for photography in the UK and internationally, and has had work exhibited in London’s Barbican Gallery, Bradford’s National Museum of Photography, The Menier Gallery London and The Fox Talbot Museum Lacock. Dozens of his photographs have been used for book or album covers. Tony’s work has appeared in more than a 100 photographic magazines both here in the UK and in America. A passionate traveller, Tony has made frequent visits to the USA, documenting the depopulating areas of western Nebraska, North and South Dakota and south-eastern Montana. His most recent book;The Water's Edge; co-written with his fellow-photographer wife Eva, celebrates the wonderful British coast, an aspect of landscape both photographers have greatly enjoyed over many decades.

Simon Palmer - Conservation. Educate, debate, enthuse, enjoy…
​
Between 2011 and 2018, Simon travelled to Namibia to work with AfriCat documenting the wildlife and their annual health checks for predators. Producing a body of work that became a book, along with his images being used for research, raising money from corporate sponsorship, and highlighting the human wildlife conflict in the region that impacts key species.
Simon's main inspiration comes from seeing people view his images and then challenging their viewpoints. He wants to cause debate, discussion, emotion, and empathy. His inspiration comes from the likes of Nick Brandt and Ansel Adams, though it doesn’t stop there.

Eva Polak: Impressionist photography. How to be an Artist with the Camera

Impressionist photography is a passion that started for Eva in 2007 when she became enchanted with the beautiful images created by this style of photography. Impressionist photography is a perfect tool which allows her to communicate with the world and to share her vision. It results from the need to express her feelings through images. It is a way to connect her creative vision with the world. Whether it is a landscape, still life, or nature, she aims to respond to the effects of colour, light or atmosphere on the subject. Eva’s Zoom promises to be as captivating as her brand of photography.

South Devon Photographic League Digital competition - Held at Newton Abbot
​
The South Devon Photographic League (SDPL) consists of an interclub competition with our nearest neighbouring clubs. These are Newton Abbot (our deadly rivals and good friends), Exmouth and Crediton. It has two parts a Dpic Competition and a Print Competition. This is an opportunity to showcase our best work and show it to a wider audience. We also get to visit other clubs and to make personal contacts. Obviously the photography is the main focus but the cakes come a close second.

Eddie Holden: Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka: What the tourist board doesn't tell you
Club member Eddie Holden will share images from his recent, extended adventures in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Never being one to stay on beaten tourist tracks, he will take us deeper into the counties visited, using his unique blend of photography to explore local transport, the people he's come to know and the abundant wildlife found along the way.
