New season kicks off with competition

Writer: Naomi Stolow Naomi Stolow

Dawlish and Teignmouth Camera Club kicked off their new season with the Third Open Competition (Prints) and welcomed Torquay-based photographer, Keith Monroe, as their Judge.

Keith, who specialises in portrait photography, has been a judge for 10 years and has worked in the photographic industry for many more.

Keith’s friendly approach to judging was very refreshing as he gave a descriptive critique to each image, rather than a purely technical one associated with such things as sharpness and cropping. He explained his process, starting with where he entered the photo, what drew his eye and the feelings it evoked across the senses.

The standard of the prints was some of the best the club had seen and newer members were pleased to have their work recognised in the awards. The topics were diverse – from a tranquil image of four sailboats moored at sunrise, to a gritty and emotive image of Auschwitz Camp.

Keith congratulated members for their images and commended them on the professional way the prints were mounted and presented.

The winners for the Black and White print category:

Gold – Ken Holland

Silver – Ernie King

Bronze – Bob Kent

Highly Commended – Bob Normand, Colin Winstanley

The winners for the Colour print category:

Gold – Alex Rosen

Silver – Barry Holmes

Bronze – Bob Kent

Highly Commended – Ken Holland x 2, Kevin McDonagh x 2, Alex Rosen

Keith was thanked by Club Chairman, Naomi Stolow, and was given a warm round of applause for making it a very enjoyable evening.

If you are interested in joining the Club, which meets on Wednesday evenings at Holcombe Village Hall, and all are welcome.
