A buzz of excitement went round Holcombe Village Hall as members of the Dawlish & Teignmouth Photography Club welcomed Judge, Marija Lees, to deliver her critique and ultimately, prizes, for the annual Panel Competition.
Marija, who is a popular visitor to the Club, started by explaining that a panel - consisting of five images - must be cohesive with a theme, or story. The images should also be processed in a similar way to bring together the colour palette and tonal range. In essence, the panel has to actually work as one image overall.
There were six submissions for the Print category covering landscapes, nature, portraiture, abstracts and travel photography. However, in an incredible, unbroken run for the last four years, Alex Rosen scooped the top prize for his dramatic black and white panel, Coastal Moods. Nigel West was awarded a Silver for his earthy toned elements of the Kasbah. Jackie Ridley received a Bronze for her mainly black and white images showing architectural and quintessential aspects of Lisbon. And Tony Wilson received a Highly Commended for his abstract panel showing light, shade and form.
Then it was the turn of the Digitally Projected Images Panels, featuring a wide variety of subjects – including a stylish display of glasses of red and white wine; the beautiful light display from the Christmas steam train coming into Kingswear; and full-contact action shots of a rugby match – leaving Marija with some difficult choices to make.
She awarded a Gold to Ken Holland for his cleverly-seen shapes and shadow patterns created by the stairs in The Box, Plymouth. Tony Wilson received a Silver award for his panel showing various elements of a classic car at the Motor Museum. Alex Rosen received a Bronze award for his action shots and close-ups of participants in a cycle race. Whilst Tejas Earp was awarded a Highly Commended for her architectural images at the Arts & Sciences Centre, Valencia.
